Fenix torches and headlamps at Recon Company: rugged lighting for the field
A Fenix torch doesn’t make it into our range because of the lumen rating on the packaging, but because it stands up to the rigours of everyday operational use and doesn’t fail at the first sign of heavy wear and tear. For over 30 years, Recon Company has been equipping the German Armed Forces, the police and emergency services, and we test lighting equipment against the same criteria as our own development projects for public authorities. We stock Fenix because the brand combines robust LED technology with simple, reliable operation and remains in the mid-range price bracket for professional use. Anyone looking for a torch for patrol duty, the workshop or a bivouac will find models here that remain operational even under pressure.
Fenix torches in action: what matters in operational lighting
What sets a Fenix torch apart from any standard LED torch from a DIY store isn’t the lumen rating on the packaging, but how it performs under pressure and how it holds up after being dropped onto tarmac. The models are designed to be shock-resistant and are protected against rain and dust to IP standards, so night-time use in drizzling rain is no problem. Thanks to a regulated driver, the brightness remains constant throughout the runtime, rather than gradually dimming. As well as white light, many models feature a red light to preserve night vision and a strobe mode to dazzle. If you need a torch that can still be switched on and off reliably whilst wearing gloves, look for a tail cap switch with a distinct click.
Fenix headlamp for hands-free use whilst bivouacking, in the workshop and on night marches
As soon as you need both hands, a Fenix headlamp is indispensable. The HM series sits securely on the head or helmet via an adjustable headband and remains comfortably light even when worn for long periods. For map-reading or in the medical tent, a red light can be switched on, which means your eyes don’t have to readjust to the darkness straight away. Most models are charged via USB-C and can alternatively run on standard 18650 rechargeable batteries, which makes it easier to source replacements in the field. If you’re working in a winter bivouac, a separate battery pack is well worth it, as it lasts significantly longer in the cold when worn close to the body.
Tactical torch, EDC or work torch: finding the right model
Not every task requires the same torch. A tactical torch from the PD or TK range produces a focused beam with a long reach, whilst the tail cap switch can be operated quickly even when the torch is in the ‘access position’. For an everyday companion in your trouser pocket, compact models from the E series are sufficient; despite their short length, they remain bright enough for patrols. Those working in workshops or vehicle maintenance are better served by the C series with its wide beam.
In potentially explosive atmospheres, such as those encountered by the fire service and in industry, explosion-proof models with ATEX certification are used. Fenix torches thus cover a wide range, from lightweight everyday lighting to high-output searchlights. Before making a choice, the main intended use should be clear, as a ‘one-size-fits-all’ torch ultimately amounts to a compromise.
Batteries, charging technology and accessories for continuous operation
A torch is only as reliable as its power supply. Most models use replaceable 18650 and 21700 Li-ion batteries, which can be charged externally via ARE chargers or directly via USB-C. For departments with multiple torches, it is worth investing in a set of spare batteries to ensure no torch fails due to a flat cell.
Replaceable batteries in the 18650 and 21700 sizes cover everything from compact everyday lighting to high-performance torches, without the need for specialised cells.
The integrated USB-C port allows the torch to be charged directly in the vehicle or via a power bank, eliminating the need for an external charger in the field.
Holsters and belt clips keep the torch within easy reach on your belt, even when things get rough whilst on the move.
With diffusers and filter attachments, the narrow beam can be transformed into a wide work light or a coloured signal.
Suitable mounts allow the torch to be attached to a helmet or mounting rail whenever both hands are needed.
The quickest way to determine which combination of torch, battery and mount is best suited to your needs is to have a brief chat with our expert advisors. You’ll find the full range of lighting products in the ‘Lighting’ category.
