Titanium, stainless steel or aluminium – the right material for your purpose

The choice of material determines weight, durability and ease of use. Titanium cookware is the lightest and toughest: it is tasteless, corrosion-resistant, acid-resistant – and priced accordingly. If every gramme counts, go for titanium. Bear in mind, however, that titanium is a poor heat conductor, which leads to hotspots – ideal for boiling water, but prone to food burning. Stainless steel cookware is heavier, but more resistant to mechanical stress and significantly cheaper to buy – the standard choice for training and day-to-day use.

Aluminium cookware sets fall somewhere in between: lightweight and affordable. Modern, hard-anodised versions are also scratch-resistant and considerably more resistant to acids than conventional aluminium. Note for stationary use: aluminium, titanium and many stainless steel outdoor sets are not induction-compatible – anyone wishing to use the cookware on modern hobs must bear this in mind when making their choice. Enamel is robust for stationary use, but cracks on impact – the chipping coating exposes the steel core, which quickly leads to rust in these areas. Not a material for a rucksack.

Cooking set, individual items or field cookware set – what do I really need?

A complete cookset provides a pot, mug and lid in a stackable system – ideal for solo hikers who want to pack everything into a single pack size. Integrated lids with straining holes, fold-away handles and internal measuring scales aren’t just gimmicks, but practical features: they can be operated whilst wearing gloves and are quiet when packed in a rucksack. If you’re cooking in a group or setting up longer-term camps, you’re better off with individual items – a larger Trangia saucepan can be scaled up more precisely than a compact set. The classic Bundeswehr field kit remains the most cost-effective solution for training purposes alone: stackable, standardised, tried and tested.

Mugs, cutlery and accessories – underrated elements of field cooking

An insulated mug keeps coffee warm for longer during morning roll call than a thin stainless-steel mug. It may sound trivial – but it makes all the difference during a winter bivouac. Outdoor cutlery made from titanium or stainless steel is an underestimated category: fork-and-spoon combos save weight and space without compromising on function. If you prefer an enamel look – for example, around a campfire or at base camp – you’ll find classic enamel mugs with a durable coating in our range.
