Pepper spray and animal repellent spray: creating distance in an emergency

In the field of non-lethal self-defence, pepper spray (Oleoresin Capsicum) is the established standard. It enables you to effectively stop a threat from a distance. It is essential to note the legal classification in Germany: pepper spray is officially authorised exclusively as animal repellent and may only be purchased and carried by members of the public for this purpose. Legally, it may only be used against human attackers in an acute situation of self-defence.

Choose between a conical spray (fog) for wide-area coverage under stressful conditions, or a ballistic jet for targeted defence and protection in windy conditions and in enclosed spaces. High-quality defence spray cartridges also offer a long range and a robust spring-loaded cap as a safety mechanism to prevent accidental discharge when carried on a belt or in a pocket. CS gas vs. OC spray: What does each defensive spray do?

As well as the classic OC active ingredient, there is often demand for CS gas (tear gas). CS gas primarily targets the pain receptors in the eyes and mucous membranes. In Germany, it is freely available for sale with a BKA certification mark for use against people aged 14 and over. The key practical disadvantage of CS gas is that, in the case of attackers under the influence of alcohol or drugs, pain perception may be significantly reduced, meaning that the deterrent effect is often lost.

In this respect, an OC-based animal defence spray has a physical advantage: it forces a reflexive closing of the eyelids and severely irritates the airways, entirely regardless of the opponent’s pain perception. If you are buying a defence spray, we primarily recommend OC products for reliable self-defence. It is best to practise handling the spray using a water-based training spray (inert spray) to master drawing and aiming without looking.

Concealed self-defence: Tactical pen and Kubotan

If you’re looking for self-defence equipment that isn’t immediately recognisable as such in everyday life, a tactical pen is an excellent choice. These pens are made from high-strength aircraft-grade aluminium or titanium and, in addition to their writing function, serve as an effective force multiplier. Handled exactly like a classic kubotan, you can use it to target specific pressure points in a close-quarters combat situation or to support law enforcement joint-locking techniques. A tactical pen often features an integrated tungsten carbide glass breaker, making it an essential emergency tool in vehicles.

Equipment for professionals: defence baton and telescopic baton

Passive self-defence: Squeal alarm and tactical torch

Not every escalation requires the immediate use of irritant spray or a kubotan. It is often sufficient simply to attract a great deal of attention and disorientate the attacker. A shrill alarm is an acoustic signalling device which, with immense sound pressure – often between 100 and 130 decibels depending on the model – immediately alerts bystanders and deters the attacker. This means of passive defence is entirely legal and can be carried by young people without any issues.

A high-intensity tactical torch is equally effective for personal protection. By quickly activating the strobe function, you can severely dazzle a potential attacker in the dark, deprive them of visual control and gain valuable seconds to escape.
