Sling bags, messenger bags and shoulder bags – a comparison of designs

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different designs, each with its own strengths.

A tactical sling bag is worn diagonally across the chest and can be swung round to the front with a single movement. Typical capacity: 5 to 15 litres. This is sufficient for a tablet, documents, first-aid kit, radio and personal items. For concealed carrying of a service weapon, there are models with an integrated quick-access compartment – inconspicuous in an urban setting, yet ready to hand in seconds. Important: Many sling bags are optimised for a specific side (usually the right shoulder, for right-handed access). If the bag is worn on the wrong side, the concealed carry (CCW) compartment and quick-access compartment will be the wrong way round – so before buying, check whether the model suits your dominant hand. A military sling bag differs from the civilian model in its reinforced seams, MOLLE compatibility and abrasion-resistant materials.

A tactical messenger bag is flatter and wider. The flap protects the contents from rain and prying eyes. What distinguishes a tactical messenger bag from a civilian laptop bag is, in addition to hidden zipped compartments, above all the stabilising strap: An additional cross-body strap (3-point system) secures the bag to your body and prevents it from swinging forwards whilst running or changing direction quickly. Messenger bags are suitable for office and indoor work, transporting documents or as a robust laptop bag.

The classic tactical shoulder bag falls somewhere in between: more compact than a messenger bag, yet not as close-fitting as a sling bag. It is ideal for quick access to small items – pens, a notepad, a multi-tool, a torch.

Materials and workmanship in tactical bags

A military shoulder bag must meet the same material standards as a rucksack, even though it has a smaller capacity. 500D Cordura is the minimum standard for service use. Lighter materials save weight, but are more likely to wear out more quickly under constant strain at the zip openings and strap attachments.

The strap is just as crucial. A wide, padded shoulder strap prevents chafing, even when worn for several hours. Quick-adjusters made of metal or reinforced plastic maintain the correct position – on cheap models, the strap slips under load and, after an hour, the bag hangs at hip height instead of across the chest.

Zips on a tactical bag are subjected to more wear and tear than on a rucksack, as you’ll be opening the bag dozens of times throughout the day. YKK zips with paracord loops or extended zip pulls aren’t a luxury here, but standard features – they’re the only way to grip the slider securely and straight away, even when wearing thick gloves.

From patrol duty to EDC – choosing the right shoulder bag

The choice of colour and features depends on the intended use. A Bundeswehr shoulder bag in Flecktarn or olive blends in with the field environment and the rest of your kit. For patrol duty with the police or customs, black or dark blue is the better choice – discreet enough for contact with the public, without compromising on tactical design.

As civilian EDC (Everyday Carry) bags, outdoor shoulder bags and understated sling bags in grey, black or coyote work well. Many users appreciate the military-grade construction but do not want a camouflage look in the office. Manufacturers such as Maxpedition, Hazard 4 and Vertx have specialised precisely in this segment: tactical quality in a civilian design.

For outdoor activities and trekking, the rule is: an outdoor shoulder bag is no substitute for a rucksack, but it complements it well. Maps, GPS, snacks and a water bottle remain within easy reach without having to open your main rucksack. An army-style shoulder bag in muted colours also works well on the trail – the robust construction easily withstands undergrowth, rain and rough handling.
