Full tang or partial tang – the construction is key

The most important factor when buying fixed-blade knives is the tang – the connection between the blade and the handle. A full-tang knife has the full cross-section of the blade running through the entire handle: maximum stability, making it the only sensible choice for woodwork, lever action and extreme stress. Disadvantage: it is heavier, and in extreme cold the steel conducts the cold into the handle. The partial tang (internal tang) is slimmer, lighter and keeps the handle warmer, but is not suitable for heavy woodwork or applying leverage. Morakniv uses a partial tang with a plastic handle in most of its models – lightweight, warm to the touch and strong enough for most outdoor tasks. Exception: The Morakniv Garberg is the only true full-tang knife in the Morakniv range – for anyone who wants to combine the robustness of a full-tang knife with Morakniv quality.

Survival knives, bushcraft knives, utility knives – three categories, three profiles

A survival knife is designed for short bursts of maximum exertion: splitting wood, starting a fire, building emergency shelter. Blade thickness from 4 mm, full tang, blade length 10–15 cm – a longer blade is rarely necessary and compromises control. Bushcraft knives are more finely ground and offer greater precision in handling: carving, striking a fire steel, food preparation. Here, Morakniv and specialist outdoor manufacturers are the first choice. Tactical knives – such as those from Eickhorn (KM series) in Solingen or Gerber – prioritise robustness, quick access and often a combination of a smooth blade and a serrated edge.

Steel and coating – what matters in the field

Stainless steel (e.g. 440C, N690, 12C27) is the easier-to-maintain choice for use in damp conditions. Carbon steel retains its sharpness for longer, but will rust if neglected. High-quality tactical knives made from carbon steel are protected by DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coatings – the high-end finish that combines rust resistance and edge retention without compromise. On more affordable models from MIL-TEC or K25, powder coating or paint finishing is the standard – a solid barrier against corrosion for training purposes. As for blade shapes: drop point for all-round tasks, tanto for maximum penetration through solid materials, and clip point for precise work at the tip.

A comparison of handle materials

G10 is the most robust plastic composite: mud-resistant, temperature-stable and offering a lasting grip. Micarta is the material of choice for professionals who work a lot with their hands: it only develops its full grip when exposed to moisture – sweat or water causes the fibres to stand up slightly, which noticeably increases grip under strain. A detail that makes a difference in professional use. Rubberised grips offer a good grip even when wearing gloves, but are less durable in the long term than G10 or Micarta. Wooden handles are attractive – but not suitable for damp working environments.

Legal notice: Fixed-blade knives and Section 42a of the Weapons Act (WaffG)

Fixed-blade knives with a blade length exceeding 12 cm are subject to the carrying ban under Section 42a of the German Weapons Act (WaffG) in Germany. Important: The ban on carrying applies, regardless of blade length, to knives classified as cutting or thrusting weapons – such as daggers, double-edged blades or combat knives. A fixed-blade knife under 12 cm may only be carried if it is declared and used as a tool. Soldiers and police officers on duty are generally covered by the ‘legitimate interest’ exception – in addition, the relevant carrying regulations of their employing authority apply. If in doubt, carry knives in a rucksack, not on your person where they are readily accessible.
