When a softshell jacket is no longer enough, that’s where the hardshell jacket comes in. Membrane types in hardshell jackets and what really matters

Not every hardshell jacket uses the same technology. The most common membrane types in the tactical sector are microporous membranes (such as Gore-Tex) and PU-coated laminates. Microporous membranes offer the better combination of waterproofing and breathability. They allow water vapour to pass through whilst reliably keeping out rainwater. PU laminates are cheaper to produce and are still waterproof, but reach their limits more quickly in terms of moisture transport during high levels of physical exertion.

The AB Waterproof models and the 3PF rain jackets for special forces utilise fully-sealed PU laminates with a high water column, which remain reliably watertight even when worn under heavy equipment.

Sealed seams: the difference between wet and dry

A membrane alone does not make a waterproof jacket. Every seam is a potential weak point through which water can penetrate. In hardshell jackets with fully taped seams, every single seam is sealed with adhesive tape. Partially taped models (critical seam sealing) protect only the most exposed areas: shoulders, hood and upper body. This saves on weight and cost, but can become a problem in heavy rain whilst carrying a loaded rucksack, as this is precisely where the highest water pressure builds up.

For day-to-day duty with the police or security agencies, a partially sealed rain jacket is sufficient in most situations. Those in the German Armed Forces who spend several days in the field or who regularly work under load in the rain during exercises need a fully sealed jacket. The investment pays for itself over the course of operational hours.

Fit under tactical gear: an underestimated purchasing criterion

A hardshell jacket for operational use must work effectively over several layers: a base layer, an insulating layer, and possibly a plate carrier or protective vest. Anyone wearing the jacket over this combination needs room for movement at the shoulders, upper arms and chest, without excess fabric billowing at the sides or getting caught under straps. Tactical models solve this with pre-shaped sleeves, elasticated inserts and a hem adjustment that can be operated even whilst wearing gloves.

The hood is another practical test: in law enforcement operations, it must be helmet-compatible or roll up flat into the collar so that it does not add bulk under a combat helmet. Models without a hood, such as some of our waterproof jackets, are deliberately designed for use whilst wearing head protection. This is not a shortcoming, but a design choice.

Rain jacket, waterproof jacket, hardshell jacket: when to choose which type

The terms overlap, but refer to different usage profiles. A rain jacket in a tactical context is a lightweight, packable shell for rapid weather protection, which is quickly pulled on during a shower. A waterproof jacket, as used in Bundeswehr terminology, is heavier, more robust and designed as part of the service uniform. Hardshell jackets cover the full spectrum: from ultra-lightweight emergency rain jackets to lined membrane jackets with integrated insulation, such as those offered by the A10 Hardshell Fighter XMF series.

The key factor is the specific operational profile. For patrol duty and short outdoor operations, a lightweight rain jacket is sufficient. For field exercises, manoeuvres and outdoor excursions in changeable weather conditions, you’ll need a full-specification hardshell jacket that functions as the outermost layer in a layering system.
