Vest or jacket: when a vest is enough

When on patrol, whilst on a hunting stand or whilst working in a stationary position, warmth around the torso is often sufficient, provided the arms remain free for equipment and movement. The choice of material determines the intended use. A softshell vest is windproof and slightly water-repellent, with a bit of stretch for the transitional seasons and windy days. A fleece vest is breathable and lightweight, and is suitable as a warm mid-layer under a fleece jacket or hardshell. Insulated models are designed for bitter cold and long periods of standing still: a thermal vest with synthetic fibre filling keeps you warm even whilst standing, and the material dries quickly.
