The shemag originated in the Arab world and was brought to Europe by soldiers of the British SAS after the Second World War.
Tying instructions:
1. Fold the shemag in the centre to form a triangle. Then place it over the head so that one part is longer than the other.
2. Bring the shorter end under the chin up to ear level.
3. Pull the longer end over the face.
4. Continue wrapping around the head until you reach the other end again.
5. Knot the two ends together. The knot should be at about ear level. Either the mouth area is covered or the scarf is worn under the chin.
