Travel bags for emergency services personnel – deployment, training courses, business trips

Anyone who is regularly deployed knows this: it’s the bag that makes all the difference. Not the first time round – but certainly by the time the handle snaps, the zip gets stuck or the material looks as though it’s been through ten years after just two. At Recon Company, we’ve been making travel bags that withstand this daily wear and tear for over 30 years – to the same standards we apply to procurement projects for public authorities.

Deployment, training course, business trip – three scenarios, three requirements

Someone heading off on a deployment packs differently from someone travelling to Munich for a training course. These three scenarios determine our selection:

  • Deployment / field camp: Large capacity (100–135L), Cordura fabric, reinforced handles and straps. The bag gets thrown about, stacked up, left out in the rain – and has to put up with it all without complaint.
  • Training course / professional development: 60–80 litres is usually sufficient. Compartimentation is more important than volume – uniforms, duty kit and equipment kept separate and easily accessible.
  • Business trips / flights: A trolley bag is practical, suitable for hand luggage or as checked baggage. Subtle colours, no tactical look unless necessary.

Why sports shop travel bags fail in the field

A standard off-the-shelf travel bag is designed for 30 kg of holiday luggage, twice a year. Emergency service personnel pack heavier loads, more frequently, and subject their bags to rougher handling. Handle joints, zips at the seams, reinforced bases – precisely where cheap bags give up after a year.

5.11 Tactical and Tasmanian Tiger are built for this kind of continuous use: Cordura fabric from 500D upwards, YKK zips, reinforced seams at all stress points. This isn’t marketing – it’s the reason why these bags still work perfectly years on.

Calculate the volume correctly

Better to have 20L more than planned. Your kit grows. Ballistic vest, helmet, boots, uniform – anyone who’s ever crammed all that into a travel bag that was too small will never buy one that’s too small again.

  • 40–60L: Weekend training course, 2–3-day business trip, personal kit excluding protective gear.
  • 80–100L: 1–2 weeks’ field camp, longer training phases, full service kit.
  • 100–135 litres: overseas deployment, deployment lasting several weeks, full personal kit (PA) including ballistic protective gear.

Cordura or polyester – what really holds up in the field

Cordura is a licensed brand of Invista. Manufacturers authorised to use the label must demonstrate compliance with defined minimum requirements for abrasion, tear and rub resistance. This distinguishes it from generic nylon or polyester fabrics without quality certification. 1000D Cordura can withstand ten years of everyday service – provided it is manufactured to the right standards.

Polyester is cheaper, but not necessarily lighter. To achieve similar strength ratings, it has to be made thicker – and therefore heavier.Polyester travel bags often appear lighter because the material is simply less durable. Acceptable for occasional training courses. A poorer choice for regular field deployments.

Trolley or carry – do the maths

Inside buildings, at the station, at the airport: trolley. Out in the field, when loading, in the barracks yard: carry. Most emergency services personnel solve this with two bags. If you only want one: trolley wheels get stuck on cobblestones and rough surfaces. Cheap wheels seize up after two trips – you’ll notice the difference by 5 am at the latest in the barracks car park.

MOLLE attachment – a platform rather than a container

Not every travel bag needs MOLLE. But if you organise your gear modularly – IFAK, multi-purpose pouch, organiser bag – you turn your travel bag into an expandable platform. Suitable accessories can be found in the Rucksacks & Bags category.

Purchasing criteria checklist

  • Usage scenario: Deployment, training course or business trip determine the volume and requirements.
  • Material: Cordura for continuous use, polyester for occasional use.
  • Capacity: Better to go one size larger.
  • Trolley: Useful for travelling – impractical off-road.
  • Zips: YKK or equivalent. Anything else causes problems.
  • Handles and straps: Reinforced seams, padded shoulder straps from 80L upwards.
  • MOLLE: Only if modular – otherwise unnecessary weight.
