Tactical trousers have to do more than ordinary work trousers. They carry equipment, protect the knees, withstand movement and mustn’t pinch even after twelve hours in the field. Operational trousers and combat trousers – what makes the difference

Operational trousers are not simply jazzed-up cargo trousers. The difference starts with the construction. Professional combat trousers from UF PRO, Claw Gear or Leo Köhler feature pre-shaped knee panels, integrated knee pad pockets and reinforced seat areas. That may sound like a minor detail, but it determines whether you can still stand up pain-free after two hours in the firing position.

Three features distinguish tactical trousers suitable for duty from leisurewear:

Knee pad integration: High-quality combat trousers have slots for knee pads. However, the key factor is how they’re secured: on cheaper models without height adjustment or an ergonomic cut, the pad rolls sideways when you kneel. UF PRO and Claw Gear use external 3D pad holders or precisely positioned internal pockets that keep the pad exactly where it’s needed.

Fit under plate carriers: The waistband must sit high enough to avoid chafing under the cummerbund. The leg pockets must not interfere with the holster or leg plate. UF PRO and Claw Gear design their combat trousers specifically for this carrying scenario.

Pocket design: It is not the number of pockets that counts, but their position and accessibility. You can access slanted cargo pockets on the thigh even whilst seated. Flat lower-leg pockets hold tourniquets or maps without dangling from the leg.

BDU trousers and field trousers – the classic choice in the field

BDU trousers have been the standard for military field trousers for decades. The Battle Dress Uniform design dates back to the 1980s but has stood the test of time: six pockets, an adjustable waistband, and drawstring-adjustable cuffs. BDU trousers from MFH or Mil-Tec offer this classic at a price that is also economical for basic training and drills.

The downside of classic BDU trousers: the cut is designed for static wear. Modern tactical trousers such as the Helikon UTP or Pentagon Ranger feature stretch panels in the crotch and at the knees. This makes them more flexible for dynamic operational situations, without compromising on durability.

Bundeswehr trousers compliant with TL (Technical Delivery Specifications) are synonymous with tried-and-tested design. The BW moleskin trousers are a classic: heavy cotton fabric, comfortable to wear, and robust for moderate use. The disadvantage of pure cotton is that it absorbs moisture, dries slowly and provides virtually no insulation when wet. For intensive field operations involving a lot of crawling and abrasion, modern NyCo blended fabrics (nylon/cotton) are technically superior. For cold-weather operations at static posts, there are moleskin trousers with a thermal lining. Outdoor trousers and trekking trousers – freedom of movement in the countryside

Outdoor trousers address a different set of requirements to operational trousers. They prioritise weight, pack size and breathability. Fjällräven and Gamsbokk produce trekking trousers that don’t cling to your thighs, even after a ten-kilometre climb.

The Fjällräven Vidda Pro is a good example: G-1000 fabric that you can regrow if needed, a zip-off feature for warm days, and pre-shaped knees without the bulk of tactical padded pockets. Not tactical trousers in the strictest sense, but outdoor trousers that really come into their own on patrols, hunting trips or long hikes.

Pentagon and AB offer hybrid models in the form of the Gomati and the Lightweight Tactical Pant: tactical pocket layout combined with lightweight, quick-drying materials. These tactical trousers work just as well as outdoor trousers for bushcraft as they do for light-duty use.

Material and workmanship – what matters in field trousers

Ripstop fabric is the standard for professional field trousers. The woven-in reinforcement grid increases tear resistance under tensile stress. A small tear does not spread so easily across the entire panel. However, ripstop is not a miracle material. Sharp thorns or barbed wire can pierce through several reinforcement squares. For extreme protection against thorns, tightly woven, smooth surfaces such as G-1000 are sometimes even preferable, as thorns are more likely to slide off. The fabric weight determines suitability for use: Lightweight ripstop trousers (under 200 g/m²) are designed for warm climates and high mobility. Heavier versions (over 250 g/m²) withstand more abrasion but are also bulkier.

Blended fabrics made from cotton and polyester (65/35 or 50/50) combine comfort with durability. Pure cotton feels more comfortable, but dries more slowly and shrinks if washed incorrectly. A synthetic blend makes tactical trousers more dimensionally stable and easier to care for.

Stretch panels at the crotch, knees and seat massively increase freedom of movement. Brands such as UF PRO and Claw Gear use 4-way stretch in key areas. This makes all the difference when you’re moving from a crouch into a sprint or climbing over obstacles.

Reinforcements at the knees and seat are essential for genuine operational trousers. Double layers of fabric, Cordura patches or integrated abrasion-resistant zones significantly extend their lifespan. Cheap BDU trousers without reinforcements are sufficient for occasional use, but will wear out quickly during intensive field operations.

Waterproof and cold-weather trousers – weather protection for the lower half

Waterproof trousers are part of standard issue in the German Armed Forces. The classic version is worn over standard field trousers when continuous rain is forecast. With the RNRS1, 3PF supplies waterproof overtrousers for special forces: compact pack size, quick to pull on over boots, waterproof membrane. These overtrousers are designed for temporary protection.

Modern 3-layer laminates go one step further. Hardshell combat trousers such as the A10 Fighter are designed for all-day wear: waterproof membrane, reinforced knees, compatible with knee protectors. In wet and cold climates, these trousers completely replace standard field trousers, rather than simply being worn over them.

Cold-weather trousers feature an insulating lining. The BW Moleskin trousers with thermal lining are a tried-and-tested model for static posts in winter. Carinthia and Snugpak offer modern alternatives with Primaloft filling, which still provide insulation even when damp.

Camouflage patterns and colours – from Flecktarn to Multicam

Flecktarn is the Bundeswehr’s standard camouflage pattern and is available in all our standard trouser styles. The three-colour camouflage print (tropical camouflage) is optimised for desert and steppe environments. For overseas deployments and international cooperation, we stock Multicam, Multicam Arid, Woodland, Coyote and Ranger Green.

Fit and sizes – how to find the right tactical trousers

Tactical trousers are often specified in inch sizes (e.g. 32/32 for waist/inseam). The cut varies considerably depending on the manufacturer. UF PRO has a slimmer fit, whilst Leo Köhler offers more room for movement in the thighs. When choosing a size, bear in mind that trousers with integrated knee pad pockets require the exact size. If you choose a size that is too large or too long, the pad will sit underneath rather than on top of your kneecap when you kneel. Modern combat trousers from UF PRO or Claw Gear feature elasticated inserts in the waistband, which ensure a precise fit. With classic BDU trousers without integrated knee pads, you can tend to go one size larger if you’re wearing a base layer underneath.
