The third generation Extended Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS) in the functional underwear category is the result of a complete overhaul of previous cold weather clothing systems in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Based on the fabric layer systems in continuous use by mountaineering professionals, the GEN-III ECWCS offers a new multi-layer insulation system that is adaptable to any climate and user requirement

Each of the ECWCS pieces fits and functions on its own, but when worn as a system, provides and performs in the most optimal conditions for use in "cold outdoor activities".
